THE MACHINES
BEHIND THE
AI BOOM

Investor Call illustration of chips and computing infrastructure

ASML’s record results reveal the industrial engine behind artificial intelligence. Where does the money flow, what could interrupt it - and which three stocks deserve a closer look?

Imagine a company that begins using AI to prepare proposals, review orders and help its staff solve problems faster. This is a hypothetical scene. The employees see a useful service on a screen; behind it sits a growing requirement for computing capacity.

Following that requirement upstream leads to chips, factories and the machines that make production possible. That is where ASML enters our story: a business selling precision equipment to semiconductor manufacturers.

Today, ASML reported record quarterly sales of €11.7 billion. [1] The investment question reaches further than one strong quarter: can the industry build the capacity its customers expect to need?

If the AI economy keeps expanding,
who supplies the capacity it needs?

02 / FROM SOFTWARE TO SILICON

Follow
the money.

AI adoption becomes an equipment opportunity when chipmakers commit to manufacturing investment.

A subscription to an AI service is several commercial decisions away from an ASML order. Providers assess their computing needs; chip producers assess customer demand; factory operators then decide whether additional capacity or a more advanced production process will earn an adequate return. This is our interpretation of the investment chain.

Conceptual flow of demand. The stages are connected; revenue does not move through them automatically or immediately.

The technology that earns its place

Lithography uses light to project circuit patterns onto silicon wafers. ASML’s extreme ultraviolet technology, or EUV, prints the intricate features needed for advanced chips. Smaller features help manufacturers fit more transistors onto a chip, supporting performance and energy efficiency. ASML is the sole commercial supplier of EUV lithography systems. [2]

These machines work within a much larger manufacturing process. Other equipment deposits materials, removes them, measures features and packages completed chips. ASML’s position is important because its equipment performs a particularly demanding step, rather than because it supplies an entire factory.

Why the factory economics matter

Accuracy must be paired with speed and reliability. Our investment interpretation: a manufacturer cares about how many usable chips it can produce, the cost of producing them and whether its factory can operate consistently. Technical progress becomes commercially valuable when it improves those economics.

ASML also earns money from services and upgrades for installed systems. That creates another opportunity: helping customers increase output from equipment they already own. Demand for productivity upgrades contributed to its latest quarterly performance. [1]

The attraction is a position inside manufacturing investment. The test is whether customer spending becomes delivered equipment, profitable support work and cash.

Read profit quality alongside growth

The Financial Times reports that approximately €500 million of quarterly net income reflects a revaluation of ASML’s Mistral investment. [3] That is different from profit earned by selling equipment. Investors should examine operating performance and cash flow alongside the headline net result.

A revaluation can improve accounting earnings without creating the same amount of operating cash. Equally, customer deposits, inventory build and shipment timing can move cash flow differently from revenue. Our interpretation is to assess the quality and repeatability of growth before projecting the latest quarter forward.

Strong results establish business momentum. An attractive stock investment also requires a sensible price for the growth still ahead.

04 / THE NEXT CAPACITY TEST

A future
worth examining.

Investor Call research and manufacturing-evidence illustration

The opportunity is substantial. Delivery, customer economics and expectations will decide how much value it creates.

Management says expected customer demand exceeds ASML’s currently planned supply for 2027 and 2028. Some customers have expressed interest in orders for 2029 and 2030. [1] Interest is not a firm order; an order is not a completed delivery; a delivery must meet the conditions for revenue recognition.

ASML’s next generation, High NA EUV, uses optics with a higher numerical aperture to improve resolution. In July, ASML reported that Intel was using it on selected layers of a commercial processor product. [4] Broader adoption depends on production economics and customers’ process decisions.

Where the business can be interrupted

ASML identifies semiconductor cycles, concentration among customers, dependence on critical suppliers, technology execution and geopolitical restrictions as material risks. Export rules can affect sales volume, product mix and timing. [5]

Our interpretation: slower AI spending can travel back through the chain into delayed factory investment. Supplier constraints can postpone deliveries even when demand is strong. A new machine can offer better resolution while still taking time to qualify in production. Each mechanism can change the pace of earnings growth.

Three possible paths / hypothetical

PATH

WHAT IT WOULD MEAN

Continued expansion

Customer spending converts into orders and deliveries. Capacity execution and margins become the key tests.

More moderate investment

Expansion continues selectively. Upgrades and services help, while new-system demand grows more slowly.

Spending slowdown

Customers delay projects. Equipment orders and deliveries soften; valuations may adjust before reported earnings do.

DATED SCENARIOS — NOT TODAY’S GUIDANCE

At its November 2024 Investor Day, ASML outlined 2030 revenue scenarios of €44-60 billion with 56-60% gross margins. [6] These are dated scenarios, not new guidance issued today. The lower end already overlaps the current 2026 revenue outlook.

The stock-market risk is paying today for a future that leaves little room for delays. We have not established an entry valuation or a price target in this edition.

05 / THREE STOCKS TO RESEARCH

Three roles.
Three cases.

Investor Call company research illustration

ASML and TSMC connect directly through manufacturing. FCCN offers a separate, more speculative technology angle.

ASML / Equipment / Nasdaq and Euronext: ASML

The core case is equipment demand plus support for installed systems. Its technological position makes it worth researching; capacity delivery, customer investment and the valuation paid remain central. Watch whether future demand indications become firm orders and profitable deliveries.

TSMC / Manufacturing / NYSE: TSM; Taiwan: 2330

TSMC operates the foundries where customer chip designs become manufactured products. Advanced packaging combines chips into larger computing systems. Its September revenue was NT$511.86 billion, up 54.6% year over year; January-September revenue rose 41.1%. [7-8] The next full earnings release is scheduled for October 15. [9]

Our investment interpretation: TSMC links chip demand to factory economics. Capacity utilization, capital spending, overseas expansion costs and geopolitical exposure deserve attention. Monthly sales growth alone does not establish AI-only revenue or quarterly profitability.

Spectral Capital / Communications and technology / OTCQB: FCCN

Spectral’s current operating base is international voice and messaging through TVS and FortyTwo. Its Q2 release reported $318.3 million revenue and $3.3 million gross profit. [10] The SEC filing shows a $1.857 million operating loss and $7.387 million net income, including a $9.886 million non-cash valuation gain. First-half operating cash outflow was $1.555 million. [11]

A SEPARATE, MORE SPECULATIVE TECHNOLOGY ANGLE

Its filing also identifies acquired AI and cybersecurity intellectual property. [11] Commercialization is a thesis to test; telecom revenue should not be relabeled AI revenue. No supplier relationship with ASML or TSMC is established here. Financing, dilution and OTC liquidity add risk.
