META | SEPTEMBER 2026
META THE $2 TRILLION | ![]() |
Meta already built one of the most powerful advertising machines in history. Now Zuckerberg is trying to turn that machine into an AI platform - and Wall Street is beginning to ask a different question.
For years, the argument was about the cost. Today, the more interesting question is what all that spending might create.

WHAT IF META'S AI STRATEGY IS STARTING TO WORK? A positive, critical look at the business behind META - and why the next chapter is about much more than Facebook. |
01 / THE MACHINE BEHIND META BEFORE AI, META | ![]() |
Most AI companies need to win distribution. Meta begins with distribution already built into everyday life.
Open Instagram in the morning. Answer a WhatsApp message at lunch. Scroll Facebook after work. Meta does not have to persuade billions of people to enter a new ecosystem before it can introduce AI. The ecosystem is already there. That is the strategic advantage hiding in plain sight.
Meta enters the AI race with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger already connecting billions of people. If AI makes recommendations better, ads more useful, customer conversations faster or assistants more capable, Meta can place those improvements directly inside products people already use.
That matters because the company is not financing this experiment with hope alone. Its advertising engine is still producing enormous revenue. In Q2 2026, Meta reported $60.8 billion of revenue, up 28% year over year. Family daily active people reached 3.60 billion. Ad impressions increased 14%, while average price per ad increased 12%.

THE IMPORTANT PART These numbers are not the AI story by themselves. They explain why Meta can afford to pursue the AI story at a scale very few companies can match. |
The old Meta question was whether Facebook and Instagram could keep growing. The new question is whether this existing machine can become the distribution layer for a much broader AI business.

02 / THE BET ZUCKERBERG ISN'T | ![]() |
He is building the infrastructure for it - and the bill is enormous.
This is where the story becomes uncomfortable - and interesting. Meta expects 2026 capital expenditures of $130 billion to $145 billion. In Q2 alone, capital expenditures were $31.1 billion. Costs and expenses rose 55% year over year, while operating margin fell to 31% from 43%. Free cash flow in the quarter was only $784 million.

Those figures explain why investors have been skeptical. Meta is asking the market to tolerate a period in which a very profitable company spends at a scale normally associated with building physical empires: data centers, GPUs, networks, power systems and custom chips.

But the spending is not random. Meta is building a chain. Compute trains the models. Models power assistants and agents. Those products enter Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and advertising. If each layer improves the next, Meta can potentially own more of the economics instead of renting intelligence from someone else.
THE QUESTION ISN'T WHETHER META CAN SPEND. THE QUESTION IS WHAT THAT SPENDING CREATES. |

03 / THE AI BEHIND THE STOCK META ISN'T BUILDING | ![]() |
It is trying to put intelligence underneath almost everything it owns.
![]() | 01 AI + ADVERTISING This is the least glamorous part of the story - and possibly the most important. AI can improve ranking, recommendations, targeting, creative generation and conversion. Meta does not need a brand-new business model for AI to matter. If AI makes its existing ad machine better, the investment can begin paying back inside a business that already operates at massive scale. |
![]() | 02 MUSE + CONSUMER AI Muse changes the narrative because it moves Meta from “AI inside the feed” toward an assistant people can deliberately use. Meta launched Muse on September 8 as a personal AI agent powered by Muse Spark. It can work through tasks, connect with apps and operate through WhatsApp. The strategic question is whether curiosity becomes habit - and habit becomes a platform. |
![]() | 03 BUSINESS AGENTS Meta is also aiming at the business side of messaging. The company says more than one million businesses are already using Meta Business Agent on WhatsApp and Messenger. That points toward a world where customer service, sales and routine business operations happen through AI inside Meta’s messaging network. |
![]() | 04 INFRASTRUCTURE Underneath all of it sits compute. Meta is developing MTIA custom silicon and says it plans four new chip generations within two years. It is also working with Broadcom, Arm, AMD, NVIDIA and others. The ambition is clear: Meta does not want AI to be a feature it buys. It wants AI to become infrastructure it controls. |
META IS NO LONGER JUST USING AI. IT IS TRYING TO BUILD AN AI ECOSYSTEM. |

04 / THE STOCK MARKET WALL STREET HAS | ![]() |
September changed the mood around META. The market is beginning to price possibility - but expectations are now higher too.
META entered September near $579 and closed September 24 at $777.59 - a dramatic move in less than a month. Yahoo Finance showed the stock up 39.1% over one month and 17.8% year to date at that point, with a market capitalization near $1.98 trillion. MarketWatch linked much of the September enthusiasm to Muse and the market’s renewed belief that Meta may have found a visible consumer expression for its AI spending.
That does not mean the debate is finished. A rising share price can be a vote of confidence, but it can also raise the standard Meta must meet. When investors begin paying for future AI success, execution becomes more important, not less.

05 / THE INVESTOR CALL VIEW GAINER OR LOSER? | ![]() |
META is giving investors more reasons to be optimistic - and more reasons to demand proof.
The easiest version of this story is to say that Meta discovered AI, spent heavily and the stock rallied. The more useful version is more complicated.
Meta already had the audience. It already had the advertising machine. It already had cash generation and engineering scale. AI is potentially valuable because it can strengthen those assets while creating entirely new ones. Muse, business agents, AI glasses, recommendation systems and custom silicon are different pieces of the same strategy: make intelligence a layer across the company.
That is the positive case. The critical case is equally clear. Meta is spending at a breathtaking pace. Q2 costs rose much faster than revenue, margins compressed and free cash flow was unusually low. A company can build brilliant technology and still disappoint shareholders if the economics do not eventually follow.
So the next chapter is not about whether Meta can build AI. It is about whether Meta can turn AI into a return large enough to justify the infrastructure underneath it.
